Noh Soup

Posted by chirashi on 20 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Kumamoto

I didn’t think it was at all possible to burn soup, because it is so soupy… but it is possible, very possible, and burnt soup is not among the things I would consider “cool” in the world.

In other news, I went to a Noh workshop last weekend. After briefly studying the subject in college, it was interesting to see a semi real performance. Old dudes and chanting & dancing always go well together.

After performing a couple of Noh pieces, the performers asked for volunteers to come up onto the stage to learn some Noh moves… These moves mostly consisted of walking, or rather only consisted of walking. It was of course most amusing to watch the gaijin walk, as they walked as though they were heavily constipated, and ready to burst at any moment. My amusement increased when the Noh performers decided to add masks to their volunteers.

Following their training, the Noh performers also selected one lucky audience member to dress of as the shite, the main performer, in this case, in the garb of a young woman, though the participant was a woman already. The dressing took quite a while, but was very impressive. I imagine the clothing layers must have encumbered the volunteer something awful.

As always, it would be best for you to see what I mean for yourself. I have uploaded the pictures. So go ahead and take a look!
